The Year 8 Boys Rugby team played a friendly fixture this evening as part of their preparation for what should be a very busy year of rugby. The boys started very well, with some excellent carrying from Sam Jubb and Solomon Mak resulting in St Mary’s taking an early 2 try lead. NSB cut the lead to one with a fast break, but Malachi Duff showed excellent speed to burst away from the defence to make it 3-1 to St Mary’s. NSB came back strongly and ran in 3 tries in quick succession to take the lead, but the boys stuck to their task well and tackled hard. The experience of the NSB players started to tell more and more as the game went on, nullifying the St Mary’s attack much more effectively and attacking the space well when they had the ball. Ethan Henderson, Torin Innes-Menzies and Sam Jubb were impressive throughout the game, constantly getting on the ball and remaining fully committed in defence. Several more tries were run in from both sides, but NSB finished the game comfortable winners 13-6.
The boys worked very hard in very challenging conditions, and with a good mixture of experienced and new players the team has an excellent chance of developing quickly. The next fixture is in early October when the team will play in an RFU Emerging Schools Festival at Kingston Park. Training is every Monday lunch and every Wednesday after school – all players are welcome!
