St Mary’s Catholic School, a school based in Newcastle upon Tyne, approximately 15 minutes from the city centre, is the Lead School for the partnership.  St Mary’s is an outstanding school with a nationally recognised reputation for academic excellence.  As a partnership of schools, our mission is to provide exciting, timely, relevant and supportive training for initial teacher trainees, to prepare them fully for their first years in teaching.

St Mary’s is a very successful, popular and happy school, rated Outstanding by the Diocese and Ofsted.  We became an academy in 2013 and enjoy outstanding facilities in a new building, which opened in 2011.  We are also very popular with parents and are one of the most over-subscribed schools in the north-east.  We have around 1,100 students in the main school and our Sixth Form, of over 200, is expected to grow to 300 in the next three years.

Our partnership of schools are conveniently located across the Newcastle, North Tyneside and Durham areas and can all be accessed easily using public transport, allowing trainee teachers to engage with more than one school during their training year.

All of the schools within our partnership operate in a similar way to support trainee teachers.  All schools have exceptionally good student behaviour and outstanding practice in Teaching and Learning.  Each school also has extensive experience of working with student teachers, and can provide excellent support throughout the training programme.

Successful completion of the School Direct programme leads to Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) and there is the opportunity to gain a PGCert, which is 60 credits towards Masters accreditation. The course starts each year in September and finishes in July. Many of our trainee teachers also gain employment within our network of schools once their training is complete.
